Endel Tulving
Estonian-Canadian experimental psychologist of memory
Estonian-born Canadian psychologist at the University of Toronto. He distinguished episodic from semantic memory in 1972 and, with Donald Thomson, described the encoding specificity principle in 1973.
Why this person matters
Tulving's distinctions gave memory researchers vocabulary for personal remembering versus general knowledge and for the role of retrieval cues. His case studies of amnesia, including patient K.C., and his collaborators shaped later work on memory and consciousness.
Main contributions
Episodic and semantic memory
Introduced in a 1972 book chapter. Episodic memory covers personal past events; semantic memory covers facts about the world. He developed the idea further in Elements of Episodic Memory (1983).
Encoding specificity
With Donald Thomson (1973), he argued that retrieval cues work best when they overlap with the context in which an item was encoded.
Autonoetic consciousness
He called the ability to experience oneself in time autonoetic consciousness and described remembering the past as mental time travel. The amnesic patient K.C., whose semantic memory was relatively normal but whose episodic memory was severely impaired, figured in this work.
Context and limits
Whether implicit and explicit memory reflect separate brain systems, as Tulving argued, or different processes within one system was debated in the 1980s and 1990s, and later theorists have adopted elements of both views. His account of episodic memory as mental time travel is his own proposal and remains under discussion.
