Maria Montessori
Italian physician and educator who developed the Montessori method
Italian physician who graduated in medicine in 1896, opened the first Casa dei Bambini in Rome in 1907 and developed the Montessori method of child-centred learning with specially designed materials.
Why this person matters
Montessori's approach influenced early childhood education worldwide. She built on the earlier work of Jean Itard and Édouard Séguin with children with learning difficulties.
Main contributions
Casa dei Bambini
The first Casa dei Bambini ('Children's House') opened on 6 January 1907 in Rome's San Lorenzo district for underserved children who had previously been unschooled.
The Montessori method
Her approach rests on scientific observation, child-centred activity and specially designed learning materials. Il Metodo (1909) appeared in English in 1912 as The Montessori Method.
International spread
She made her first trip to the United States in 1913 and returned in 1915 for the Panama-Pacific Exposition. She later lived in Barcelona from 1916, the Netherlands from 1936 and India from 1939 to 1946.
Context and limits
Her method gained official recognition after she met Mussolini in 1924, and conflict with the Fascist system began around 1930. William Heard Kilpatrick's 1914 book The Montessori System Examined was critical and dismissive. A 2017 review found broad evidence of efficacy with methodological limits, and two 2023 meta-analyses reached similar conclusions. The claim that she was Italy's first woman doctor is inaccurate: Ernestina Paper graduated in Florence in 1877.
