Richard Nisbett
American social psychologist who studied culture, cognition and attribution
Social psychologist at the University of Michigan whose work includes the actor-observer bias, a 1977 paper on limits of introspection, and The Geography of Thought (2003), which argues that East Asian and Western ways of thinking differ.
Why this person matters
Nisbett's work links social cognition and culture: how people explain behaviour, how well they know their own reasons, and whether habits of thought vary across societies. He worked with co-authors such as Edward Jones and Timothy Wilson, and his cultural claims are now debated.
Main contributions
Actor-observer bias
With Edward E. Jones he named the tendency of actors to explain their own behaviour by the situation, and of observers to explain the same behaviour by the actor's disposition.
Telling more than we can know
A 1977 paper in Psychological Review with Timothy Wilson argued that many mental processes are inaccessible to conscious awareness. K. Anders Ericsson and Herbert Simon offered an alternative view in 1980.
Culture and ways of thinking
The Geography of Thought (2003) contends that Asian and Western cognition differ and that the differences are measurable. He co-directs the Culture and Cognition programme at Michigan.
Context and limits
The East-West contrast is contested. A multi-site study of almost 1,000 people in 11 countries, reported by the University of the Philippines in 2026, found no clear East-West divide on analytic versus holistic tests, and its authors present this as a challenge to the view associated with Nisbett. His 2009 book Intelligence and How to Get It argues that environment matters more than genes for intelligence; the psychologist James J. Lee criticised it for not engaging the strongest evidence for genetic factors.
In your introductory course
Culture and diversity.Appears in social cognition, attribution and culture chapters. Students meet the actor-observer bias and the East-West thinking contrast, and should treat the cultural contrast as a hypothesis under test.
